Over the past twelve months, there has been a dramatic increase in hate crimes and violence perpetrated against individuals of Asian and Pacific Islander heritage across the country. This morning we awoke to the horrific news of the shooting deaths of 8 people in Atlanta last night, six of whom were Asian women. This act of violence only elevates the critical importance of standing in solidarity with our Asian & Pacific Islander community and to stand, and act, against racist violence.
Stop AAPI Hate reported more than 2,583 anti-Asian hate crimes between March and August of last year alone, and these incidents are historically grossly underreported. Fueled by misinformation regarding the pandemic, rhetoric from the former President, and a history of anti-Asian racist violence, these incidents have skyrocketed, increasing by over 150% in major cities.
The intersectionality of identity has to be at the heart of uniting against hate. By understanding and seeing oppression against any group as the threat it presents to all groups, we must unite in our solidarity against white supremacy. These events also come as we’re celebrating Women’s History Month and reading about continued acts of violence against women- sexist violence that we must denounce as well.
This is a reminder of the ongoing threat that white domestic terrorism is to our entire country. Whether these specific murders were racially motivated or not is irrelevant. Our country is founded on the principles of justice, and when communities of color experience repeated trauma void of justice, we will not ignore the racial implications of such tragedy.
As our work of an aspiring anti-racist organization continues, STRIVE Prep condemns this racist rhetoric and violence and stands in solidarity with our Asian & Pacific Islander staff, students, and families. We see the burden carried by hearing about this violence, seeing it minimized or dismissed in our society, and experiencing racism directly. We commit to act in our school communities to address this racism and we give support and stand alongside you in this quest for justice.
I challenge all of us to support, collaborate, and act in support of our API community to bring justice to our schools, our communities, and our world.

Durante los últimos 12 meses, ha habido un aumento dramático en los crímenes de odio y la violencia en contra de las personas de origen asiático o de las islas del Pacífico en el país. Esta mañana, despertamos con la noticia terrible del asesinato de 8 personas en Atlanta anoche; seis de ellas eran mujeres asiáticas. Este acto de violencia acentúa la importancia crítica de solidarizarnos con nuestra comunidad asiática y de las islas del Pacífico, hablar y actuar en contra de la violencia racista.
La organización Stop AAPI Hate (Alto al Odio a las Personas Asiáticas y de las Islas del Pacífico) reportó más de 2,583 crímenes de odio en contra de los asiáticos entre marzo y agosto del año pasado y se sabe que una cantidad tremenda de estos incidentes no se reportan. Estas situaciones han aumentado vertiginosamente, en más del 150% en las ciudades grandes, alimentadas por información errónea sobre la pandemia, los mensajes del presidente anterior y la historia de violencia racista contra los asiáticos.
La interseccionalidad de la identidad tiene que estar en el centro de la unión contra el odio. Al entender y ver la opresión contra cualquier grupo como la amenaza que presenta para todos los grupos, debemos unirnos en nuestra solidaridad contra la supremacía blanca. Estos eventos también suceden al celebrar el Mes de la Historia de las Mujeres y leer sobre los constantes actos de violencia contra las mujeres. Es violencia sexista que también debemos denunciar.
Este es un recordatorio de la amenaza constante que representa el terrorismo blanco nacional en todo nuestro país. Que estos asesinatos específicos hayan estado motivados por el racismo o no, es irrelevante. Nuestro país está fundado sobre el principio de justicia y, cuando las comunidades de color viven el trauma repetido de la falta de justicia, no ignoraremos las implicaciones raciales de dicha tragedia.
Al continuar nuestro trabajo inspirador como una organización antiracista, STRIVE Prep condena esta retórica racista y la violencia y se une en solidaridad con nuestro personal, estudiantes y familias asiáticas y de las islas del Pacífico. Vemos la carga que soportan al escuchar sobre esta violencia, verla minimizada o ignorada en nuestra sociedad y cómo viven el racismo de manera directa. Nos comprometemos a actuar en las comunidades de nuestra escuela para atacar este racismo, apoyarlos y estar a su lado en esta búsqueda por la justicia.
Invito a todos a apoyar, colaborar y actuar al lado de nuestra comunidad asiática y de las islas del Pacífico para traer justicia a nuestras escuelas, nuestras comunidades y nuestro mundo.
