Southwest, Westwood and SMART schools closed Oct. 5

October 04, 2023
By Sally Winter

Dear Rocky Mountain Prep Southwest, Westwood and SMART communities,

It is our priority and commitment to keep you informed of incidents related to student safety.

There was a shooting incident in the southwest neighborhood, outside our schools today, after dismissal. While we do not believe there is any current threat to our campuses, these types of incidents are upsetting and traumatizing to students, staff, and our broader community.

In light of these events, and to support the emotional well-being of our community, RMP Southwest, Westwood, and SMART schools will be closed Thursday, October 5.

At the time of the incident, RMP staff notified the police immediately, followed DPS safety protocols, and entered a brief lockdown, followed by a secure perimeter. Students, staff, and families acted quickly, calmly, and safely. DPS ultimately released the secure perimeter and dismissal resumed. As a reminder, a lockdown takes place when a threat has been identified in the area of our schools. All exterior doors are locked to prevent any hazards or threats to enter the school. No entry or exit to the school is allowed during this response, including staff and parents.

This is an ongoing investigation by Denver Police Department, and therefore we do not have any additional information to share.

The safety and well-being of students is our top priority at Rocky Mountain Prep and we are planning  ongoing support at our campuses. Please check in with your child and see how they are doing.  Let us know if you need additional support and here are some resources that may be helpful:

  • Rocky Mountain Crisis Partnership 1-844-493-8255
  • Mental Health Center of Denver (MHCD) 303-504-6500
  • Second Wind Fund 720-962-0706
  • Safe2Tell Colorado (report anonymously) 1-877-542-7233

Sincerely,

  • Mental Health Center of Denver (MHCD) 303-504-6500 (Centro de Salud Mental)

Atentamente,

Bridget Tiebout
