Update For Start of School Year

Denver Public Schools announced on Friday a significant change to the return to school plans that they had proposed a month ago.

The 2020-21 school year will begin a week later, on Monday August 24, and the school year will begin remotely at least until September 8, at which time the district will decide if a potential gradual return to in person learning is possible. 

This announcement comes after DPS leaders and members of the Board of Education met with local health experts from Denver Health to discuss the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in our community. 

We are fully supportive of this decision and have been advocating for it based on your feedback. Thank you to the many of you that have filled out our survey, if you have not done so yet, there is still time to give us your feedback. We have heard your concerns loud and clear regarding the changing health guidance and the need to continue reassessing the procedures and protocols to ensure our staff and student safety. As with our original plan, remaining in 100% remote learning will continue to be an option for families if and when we return to in-person learning.

What this looks like at STRIVE Prep: 

• August 17th - 20th: will be time for students to connect remotely with teachers.  We’ll hold advisory programming and other start of the year activities, all remotely.  We’ll also make sure during this week that you and your student have all of your technology needs met to prepare for remote learning.  

• August 17th:  Concurrent Enrollment courses for high school students begin.

• August 24th: Remote learning will launch for all students. 

• September 8th: DPS’ current commitment is to remain remote until at least this time.  They will be evaluating health guidance and infection rates locally as they consider if hybrid models will be possible.

We learned a lot during remote learning in the spring, and have used the summer time to plan for a stronger remote learning model for your children this Fall, which will include a more structured daily schedule and more live teaching.

Denver Public Schools  will also be holding Facebook Live sessions with the Superintendent and School Board Director every weekday at 10:00 a.m. in English and 10:30 a.m. in Spanish on the DPS Facebook page.

We know the last few weeks have produced some fast shifting guidance and messaging from the network, from our district, and throughout our country. Keeping your child and STRIVE Prep teachers safe and healthy is our priority right now. We will continue to advocate on your behalf, and ensure the safest procedures if and when we return to in-person learning. We appreciate your continued partnership and support during these times.

Las Escuelas Públicas de Denver anunciaron el viernes un cambio significativo en los planes de regreso a la escuela que habían propuesto hace un mes. El año escolar 2020-21 comenzará una semana después que planeado, el lunes 24 de agosto, y el año escolar comenzará remotamente al menos hasta el 8 de septiembre, momento en el cual el distrito decidirá si un retorno gradual al aprendizaje en persona sería posible.

Este anuncio se produce después de que los líderes de DPS y los miembros de la Junta de Educación se reunieron con expertos locales en salud de Denver Health para analizar la pandemia de COVID-19 en nuestra comunidad.

Apoyamos plenamente esta decisión y la hemos abogado en función de sus comentarios. Gracias a muchos de ustedes que han completado nuestra encuesta, si aún no lo han hecho, todavía hay tiempo para darnos su opinión. Hemos escuchado sus inquietudes en voz alta y clara con respecto a los cambios en la orientación de salud y la necesidad de continuar evaluando los procedimientos y protocolos para garantizar la seguridad de nuestros estudiantes y maestros. Como hemos dicho en nuestro plan original, la opción de un aprendizaje 100% remoto seguirá siendo una opción para las familias siempre y cuando regresamos al aprendizaje en persona.

Cómo se ven estas actualizaciones en STRIVE Prep:

• Del 17 al 20 de agosto: será el momento para que los estudiantes se conecten remotamente con los maestros. Realizaremos programación de asesoramiento y otras actividades de inicio de año, todo de forma remota. También nos aseguraremos durante esta semana de que usted y su estudiante tengan satisfechas todas sus necesidades tecnológicas para prepararse para el aprendizaje remoto.
• 17 de agosto: comienzan los cursos de inscripción simultánea para estudiantes de la preparatoria. 
• 24 de agosto: lanzamiento del aprendizaje remoto para todos los estudiantes.
• 8 de septiembre: el compromiso actual de DPS es permanecer remoto hasta al menos el 8 de septiembre. Evaluarán la orientación sanitaria y las tasas de infección a nivel local, ya que consideran si serán posibles modelos híbridos.

Aprendimos mucho durante el aprendizaje remoto en la primavera, y hemos usado el verano para planificar un modelo de aprendizaje remoto más fuerte para sus hijos este otoño, que incluirá un horario diario más estructurado y más enseñanza en vivo.
