Thank you, Superintendent Cordova

November 16, 2020
By admin

On Friday, Denver Public Schools announced that Superintendent Susana Cordova has decided to accept a position with Dallas Independent School District. I want to take time today to reflect on the news of her departure which the district shared on Friday.

I’ve known Susana for all of the 15 years of STRIVE Prep’s existence, and I’ve always known her as a fierce ally of students and a courageous leader of community.  At every turn, she has elevated voices, listened first, and championed students, parents, and teachers on behalf of equity.  She has challenged our network to live its values and supported us at every moment.  She embodies the students first commitment of the Denver Public Schools.

In a district that serves 53% Latino students, and for our schools that serve upwards  of 90% Latino students, we understand the significance of Denver’s first Latina Superintendent; what a gift it was to have a leader that had a similar upbringing as many of our students and what a loss it is for our community to see her go. Susana is a child of Mexican-American parents and a first-generation college graduate. She is a DPS alum, parent, teacher, and school leader, and with that brought a distinct perspective and passion for the work that needed to be done to make DPS a great district that served ALL students.

We are incredibly grateful for the work that Susana has done over the course of her 31 years in DPS; for her deep commitment to students and educators, her commitment to equity and supporting students of color, and her commitment to a collaborative, community-focused leadership to ensure that every child is successful during and after their time in DPS, not by accident but by design.

Details on the transition have yet to be determined. We will keep you updated on any next steps and opportunities to engage in the process of finding our next Denver Public Schools Superintendent. We join the many voices that call on the Denver Public School Board to select a leader who will preserve Susana’s legacy of equity, and achievement, for all students across our great city.

Thank you, Susana, for your dedication and service to Denver and its students. You will be greatly missed.
