Dear STRIVE Prep Friends and Supporters,
We write to you today about important steps we are taking to better adapt to the changing landscape in Denver and continue to provide high-quality education for our students. After much consideration, the STRIVE Prep Board of Directors voted last night that STRIVE Prep - EXCEL will be consolidating with our STRIVE Prep - SMART high school. As a result of this consolidation, STRIVE Prep- EXCEL will be closing at the end of this school year. STRIVE Prep - SMART will increase its student enrollment for the 2020-21 school year (pending DPS Board approval), allowing impacted STRIVE Prep - EXCEL students to continue their high school experience at STRIVE Prep-SMART. This consolidation will allow STRIVE Prep to continue to provide a robust high school experience to students from both schools.
Over the past couple years, STRIVE Prep - EXCEL has been hit hard by low enrollment numbers across the district and particularly in Northwest Denver. Our efforts to provide students with the high-quality academics they deserve and that we strive for has become less successful over time. A robust high school experience of high academic quality requires a large number of course offerings, extracurricular programs, and staffing structures. With only 259 students enrolled this year, the school has seen these important student experiences, and academic performance, suffer.
This was a difficult, but strategic decision that will be better for our students and network in the long run. The board made this decision with our students’ futures in mind, as all Denver students deserve the best education and academic experience possible. We are committed to ending this school year strong for our staff and families. We will work individually and collaboratively with staff and students to find the best opportunities for them moving forward.
In the long term, Denver’s students will be best served by vibrant, fully enrolled schools that can meet their diverse needs with exceptional program offerings. This can’t happen until we make courageous decisions across the city to align the size and scope of our schools’ programs to the changing enrollment conditions in Denver. We’re taking this step today with STRIVE Prep - EXCEL and STRIVE Prep - SMART. We encourage other schools of all models to join us in this process. We believe that ultimately when schools across the city adjust to this changing landscape, all students will be best served.
We’re making this decision with the support and thought partnership of Denver Public Schools. “We commend STRIVE Prep for the thought and collaboration they’ve put into making this decision on behalf of all high school students in West Denver,'' said DPS Superintendent Susana Cordova. “It’s an approach we can learn from and build on as we continue our community outreach and collaboration on how to best serve our students as the city’s population and neighborhoods continue to change.”
We’re so grateful for the thoughtful partnership with DPS, and look forward to the type of dialogue she described. We are deeply grateful to our partners and community members that continue to support all of our STRIVE Prep schools in providing a high quality education for our highest needs students in Denver. Consolidation comes with its own challenges and we are excited about providing even more students the high quality programming and academics that STRIVE Prep - SMART has been offering for the past seven years.

Les escribimos hoy sobre los pasos importantes que estamos tomando para adaptarnos mejor al panorama cambiante en Denver y continuar brindando educación de alta calidad para nuestros estudiantes. Después de mucha consideración, la Junta Directiva de STRIVE Prep votó anoche que STRIVE Prep - EXCEL se consolidará con nuestra preparatoria STRIVE Prep - SMART. Como resultado de esta consolidación, STRIVE Prep - EXCEL se cerrará al final de este año escolar.
