Continuing the work amidst this historic election

November 08, 2020
By admin

Yesterday, nearly 40 STRIVE Prep staff gathered together for Leadership Academy, our informal leadership development program.  We were literally working through quotes about leadership and identifying leadership qualities together at the moment CNN called the election.  I'm pretty sure we'll all remember where we were at that moment.

We paused our programming and spent some time sharing feelings and reflections.

We shared that we are just beginning to process what it means for the first Black woman and first South Asian woman to be elected to the Vice-Presidency, and celebrated VP-elect Kamala Harris' immense courage to challenge and break that barrier.  Today, women of color in our community- staff and scholars- can see their identity represented at the highest levels of institutional power, which has never before been true in this nation.

We shared about the specific credit to Black voters and Black leaders whose voice and contributions impacted this outcome, be it in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, or Atlanta, Georgia. And specifically to the credit of the Native American and Latino voters in Arizona. We shared gratitude for the enormous majority of voters of color who turned out in record numbers to impact this election.

We shared how the threat of white supremacy, systemic racism and oppression, and misogyny still loom so large in our country and in our own work. We shared our anxiety about how those values will be expressed over the days to come, and we shared the enormously disproportionate impact of these threats on our community of color, our LGBTQ community, and women in our community.

The work in our community moves on today, as it will every day, and the generational challenge of eradicating systemic oppression continues.  The preservation of places and institutions that stand for justice could never be more important.  There are challenges ahead that we understand, and challenges ahead that we don't understand.  May we rise to meet them together.

I'm so grateful to share this journey with each of you.

Stay safe; stay connected; stay together.

Chris Gibbons
