Network Updates

May 29, 2020

RMP Community,

I hope all of you had a safe and restful Memorial Day weekend. This weekend reminded me just how soon summer is approaching, and how excited and determined I am for our RMP community to have a strong finish in these last two weeks’ in the 2019-2020 school year!

Getting to this point of the year, we have learned and grown a lot as an organization and as a community and I continue to be in awe in the many ways that I see so many of you stepping into the role of “stay-at-home teacher.” Everything from ensuring that your scholars are logging in and engaging with our virtual learning platforms like Clever and Lexia, to just simply taking the time to read at home with them, thank you for your time, flexibility, and perseverance as we’ve navigated our new normal.

A couple of weeks ago I shared in a video my best thinking of what school could look like going into next year, which is a hybrid school model of virtual learning and in-person learning. Today, DPS shared a video with families about plans for the fall. If you haven’t already, please be sure to watch the video, available in English and Spanish.

While we don’t know the exact details of what the fall will look like, we do know with certainty it will look different. “Different” will mean taking extra precautions and could include things such as learning half in-person/half at home and/or rotating days or weeks. We also know that we will have to be prepared to switch to fully remote learning at any time.

Again, while we don’t know what the exact plans of the fall will look like, we do know that they will likely include the following:

  • Wellness/symptom screening and temperature checks upon arrival and for anyone entering the building
  • Health measures enforced through the school day, including teachers and students wearing masks and be asked to wash/sanitize hands frequently through the day and thorough building cleaning and disinfecting of the entire school facility both through the day and in the evenings
  • Classroom occupancy limited to ensuring physical distancing of at least 6 feet in classrooms / and ensuring between 10-16 people in classrooms (including teacher and students) at any given time
  • Minimizing the movement of people throughout the building during the day and no large gatherings

Our top priority in going back to in-person learning is safety. Know that our network team continues to work very closely with DPS and APS to ensure scholar and family safety.

As we continue to stay virtual over the summer, I’m excited to share that RMP has the opportunity to engage in a free virtual summer school for returning scholars. This virtual summer school will run from June 29 - July 31, 2020, and will focus on supporting scholars in math and reading, especially our rising 4th & 5th graders. Reach out to your teacher for more details and enrollment info or sign up here!

With love,

RMP Community,

I hope you had a chance to watch the wonderful CBS news story highlighting the important social-emotional work RMP is doing, Compass Circles. As I share in my video below, I believe that work has never been more important and we are expanding it significantly going into the fall.

I hope you all are continuing to stay well, and are enjoying this beautiful spring weather. I wanted to take a moment to share a couple reminders with you all.

  • As you will see in family newsletters this week, RMP will be running STAR testing in the coming weeks. Please be sure to take the time to read through this one-pager, as we believe that the guidance given will set both you and your scholar(s) up for success while engaging with the STAR test.
  • I also wanted to remind you all to take a look at the video I posted last week - the information shared in that video is our best thinking on what school could look like going into school year 2020 - 2021.
  • Lastly, I wanted to remind you all that our teachers and staff will be observing Memorial Day on Monday, May 25th, so please do not plan on our team checking in with your scholar(s) on that day.

I feel lucky to continue this work alongside you all, and hope you all enjoy the long weekend if you have one!

RMP Community,

Happy first day of May! This week I wanted to invite our community to engage in celebrating our teachers next week for Teacher Appreciation Week!

I’ve been so impressed with the leadership, perseverance, and love our teachers have demonstrated in our new remote learning world, and could not be more thankful for the impact each and every one of them is making on our community. I invite you all to please join me in sharing your gratitude with your scholar’s teacher sometime this next week.

I also wanted to take the time to appreciate you all, our at-home teachers! You all continue to be such a critical piece to ensuring our scholars are flourishing in this new environment, and as a fellow parent, I know it is not easy! I am deeply appreciative of your support.

Lastly, our principals, teachers, and I have heard your feedback asking for more social-emotional connection. So, I wanted to share an update on our social-emotional learning (SEL) program in our new remote learning context. All students should be experiencing SEL practices in a live virtual environment, at least once a week, starting in the next few weeks, noting that many teachers have already incorporated SEL practices into their teaching model. We would love to continue to hear from you and your scholars about these opportunities, so please share your feedback with our team.

RMP Community,

I hope this note finds you well. I wanted to share a few updates and an ask with our community as we’re now closing in on almost a month of remote learning:

  • We would love your help as we express thanks to our amazing teachers during the upcoming teacher appreciation week (May 4 - 8)! If you’d like to participate, send a short video (10 seconds or less) of your student, family, or yourself to expressing your appreciation for our teachers! You can also send a photo, letter, or picture from your scholar. We need submissions by 4/27 to be included in our message to our team, but don’t hesitate to reach out the week of May 4 as well!

  • As a reminder from my last note, we have decided that next Monday, April 27 and Tuesday, April 28 will act as “school days”, and our last day of school will be Wednesday, June 10th.

  • I wanted to take a moment to recognize Ramadan beginning yesterday evening, and wanted to wish Ramadan Mubarak to all who observe!

As we continue to adjust to our new normal, there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about how grateful I am for each and every one of our parents and caregivers during this time.

All of you are critical in ensuring that our remote learning plan is successful, and week after week we’re seeing over 90% of our scholars engaging with our remote learning platforms. I see you all leaning in our Perseverance and Adventure PEAK values, and appreciate all that you’re doing!

April 17, 2020

RMP Community,

I hope you all are continuing to stay healthy and safe. As a father of a 16-month-old daughter and CEO, I am working to try to juggle the demands of working remotely and parenting, as I’m sure many of you are as well! I am getting lots of practice in our PEAK values of Perseverance and Adventure!

I wanted to share a few updates with you all as we’re closing in on week two of remote learning:

  • Great work! I’m happy to share that ~90% of scholars have been engaging with our online blended learning programs - that’s amazing! These programs along with consistent coaching calls with scholars’ teacher are crucial to our remote learning plan. If you have not been able to log-in or have any other access issues, please make sure to reach out to your scholar’s teacher, we’re here to help!

  • With no state testing this year, we have decided that Monday, April 27 and Tuesday, April 28th will act as “school days,” and our last day of remote learning taking place on Wednesday, June 10th.

  • Our schools are hosting virtual coffee hours this week and next! I hope to “see” many of you there!

Again, thank you for all that you all are doing at home to support learning and growth. I’m sure not many of you were planning on being at-home teachers, but you’re doing an incredible job and we appreciate all that you’re doing!
